Namibia has made sporting history by becoming the first African nation to sign an Olympic cooperation agreement with South Korea.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Namibia National Olympic Committee and Commonwealth Games Association (NNOC-CGA) and the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee (KSOC) during the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games.

South Korean officials confirmed that Namibia is the first African National Olympic Committee to enter into such an agreement with the KSOC, marking a significant milestone in relations between the two countries.

The agreement was signed by NNOC-CGA President Dr Ndeulipula Hamutumwa and KSOC President Seungmin Ryu in the presence of senior government, diplomatic and Olympic representatives. It aims to strengthen cooperation in athlete and coach exchanges, joint training camps, sports science, sports medicine, technical education and high-performance sport management.

The partnership will focus on sports where South Korea has achieved global success, including archery, taekwondo, fencing, shooting and badminton. For Namibia, the agreement offers valuable opportunities to enhance athlete development, particularly in archery, where the country recently won seven gold medals at the African Championships.

The partnership forms part of Namibia’s broader strategy to expand international sporting cooperation ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games and beyond.
