The West Coast Ecumenical Movement (WEM) has donated N$11 000 and toiletries to the Walvis Bay Kids Haven Children’s Home, while also contributing N$5 000 and toiletries to the Wees Lig Vereniging, reaffirming its commitment to supporting vulnerable members of the Walvis Bay community.
The donations were made possible through offerings collected during a series of Pentecost services hosted by churches affiliated with the ecumenical movement. The initiative reflects WEM’s commitment to compassion, community service and making a meaningful difference in the lives of those most in need. The West Coast Ecumenical Movement brings together Christian churches across Walvis Bay to promote unity and serve the community through charitable initiatives, civic events and outreach programmes.
The donations underscore the importance of collaboration between churches and the community in supporting vulnerable residents and demonstrate how collective giving can make a meaningful impact. The donations were officially handed over during a ceremony in Walvis Bay, where WEM Chairperson and pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Narraville, Pastor Mark Beukes, said the initiative demonstrated the generosity of the local community. “It is very special for us as ecumenical churches to hand over what the community has entrusted to us. Although it may seem like a small drop in the bucket, every contribution helps to make a difference,” Pastor Beukes said. He explained that the funds and donated toiletries came from offerings collected during Pentecost services, with several individuals making additional contributions specifically for the two beneficiary organisations.
Pastor Beukes also thanked an anonymous donor and all those who supported the initiative. “We are grateful for what we have been able to do. These gifts come from the community, and we ask that you receive them in the spirit of solidarity and love with which they were given,” he said. Receiving the donation on behalf of Walvis Bay Kids Haven Children’s Home, Lorraine Theron expressed gratitude to the churches and the wider community. “We wish to express our sincere gratitude to the community of Walvis Bay for their generosity shown to the centre through the West Coast Ecumenical Movement. Doing unto a child is as doing unto the Lord. May the Lord bless you, keep you and make His face shine upon you,” she said.
The Wees Lig Vereniging, which provides assistance to people facing hardship in the community, also welcomed the support. Founder Ds Mercedy van Wyk thanked the movement for its contribution, saying it would strengthen the organisation’s mission of bringing hope and practical assistance to those in need.
