Walvis Bay Self Service (Multisave) is celebrating an incredible 50 years of serving the Walvis Bay community, marking half a century as one of the town’s best-known family businesses.
The store officially opened in the beginning of March 1976. To celebrate the milestone, customers can enjoy special birthday offers currently available in store until 4 August. Residents are encouraged to visit the shop to see the wide range of specials on offer. Behind the success of Walvis Bay Self Service are three brothers – Joaõ, Nardo and Amandio Junior Sardinha – who continue the family tradition started by their late father.
In an interview with Namib Times, Mr Nardo Sardinha shared the family’s journey. Their father, Mr Amandio Sardinha, moved from the beautiful island of Madeira to Walvis Bay in search of new opportunities. In 1966, he opened a small business called Sardinha’s Market. Three years later, in 1969, he established the well-known Trust Market, which was later sold to the Fernandes family. Then, in 1976, Walvis Bay Self Service opened its doors and has been serving generations of local families ever since.
Over the years, many residents have walked through its doors, making the shop a familiar part of daily life in Walvis Bay. Today, the Sardinha family also owns three other shops in town, including the Quickshop at the Total service station in Langstrand. Mr Sardinha said the next generation of the family is already being coached to one day take over the businesses, ensuring that the family’s legacy continues for many years to come.
The family is also preparing for an exciting new chapter. Construction has started on a brand-new Walvis Bay Self Service building at the former Magic Discounters site. Once completed, the current store will close and move to the new premises. The new store is expected to be finished in September next year and will offer customers a larger shopping area and more parking, making shopping even more convenient.
Walvis Bay Self Service celebrates 50 years in business and is also celebrating the loyal support of the community that has stood by the family through the decades.
The Sardinha family’s story is one of hard work, dedication and commitment to serving Walvis Bay, and they look forward to welcoming customers for many more years to come.
