Sparta United, Vikings and Oceans ready for quarter-final battles
The Coastal Namibian Rugby Union (NRU) will have three representatives carrying the region’s hopes into the NRU First Division playoffs this weekend, with Sparta United, Vikings and Oceans all eyeing a place in the semi-finals.
Sparta United head into the knockout stage as the strongest Coastal outfit, finishing their 14-match Central/North campaign at the top of the log with an impressive 59 points.
Their outstanding league performance also placed them second on the combined NRU First Division standings. They now face a familiar coastal rival, Oceans, in what promises to be a fiercely contested quarter-final derby at the Sparta United Rugby Field in Walvis Bay.
Oceans enter the playoffs in fifth position on the Central/North log and seventh on the combined standings, having collected 31 points from a balanced campaign of seven wins and seven defeats. They scored 422 points and conceded 358.
Despite the difference in league positions, the coastal derby is expected to produce a highly competitive battle, with both sides knowing that regular-season form counts for little once the playoffs begin.
Swakopmund-based Vikings will also have home advantage when they welcome Vipers to the SFC Sports Field in Swakopmund. Vikings completed their 14-match programme in second place on the Central/North log with 52 points, earning fourth position on the combined standings. They recorded 10 victories and four defeats, scoring an impressive 527 points while conceding 276 – a points difference of 251. Their consistency throughout the season makes them one of the leading contenders for promotion and playoff glory.
Vipers, meanwhile, finished second on the Central/North log and fifth on the combined standings with 49 points, setting up another heavyweight quarter-final encounter. For Sparta United, Vikings and Oceans, the message is simple: the coastal challenge has reached its knockout stage, and only victory will keep their championship dreams alive.
Down south, Keetmanshoop Rams and Oranjemund have emerged as the leading forces in the First Division South. Rams finished top after recording five victories from six matches, collecting 26 points and boasting a points difference of plus 87.
Rams will host Eastern Bulls, who finished sixth in the Central/North Division and eighth on the combined standings, in Keetmanshoop. Oranjemund, who finished second in the Southern division and third overall on the combined log, will welcome Okahandja Highlanders. Highlanders finished fourth in the Central/North standings and sixth on the combined log, setting up another intriguing playoff clash. All four quarter-final matches are scheduled to kick off at 15:00 this weekend.
