The Walvis Bay Golf Club hosted its popular WBM Flags competition last weekend, with 38 golfers taking to the course in a challenging format that tested both skill and endurance.

Played under medal rules with competitors receiving six shots fewer than their official handicaps, the event produced some interesting flag placements around the course.

Pieter “Shackleton” Thompson was the first player to plant his flag, doing so near the 14th tee box. However, it was Jakkie de Witt who emerged as the overall winner after reaching the 18th green, securing first prize.

He was presented with his prize by Wouter van Wijk of WBM. Schalk van Wyk claimed second place, followed by Willie Venter Jnr in third and Andre Burger in fourth. Eugene Slippers, Wynand Moller and Thomas Wolff completed the prize winners in fifth, sixth and seventh places respectively.

The only two-club on the day was recorded by Jonas Niilenge.

Club officials thanked Team WBM for its continued support of the event, with Kurt Brits confirming during the prize-giving that the company will once again sponsor the tournament next year.

Attention now turns to this weekend’s Namibia Ship Chandlers Betterball competition, which will be played at 85% handicap allowance. In addition to the Betterball prizes, two individual prizes will also be up for grabs.

The club’s Annual General Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, 19 August, at 18:30. Members are encouraged to make themselves available for committee nominations.

In the Thursday Seniors competition, Koos Jacobs continued the recent winning streak by the beginners, claiming victory with 40 points. Willie van Wyk finished second on 34 points, edging Boel Grobbelaar into third on count-out after both players finished on the same score. Bossie Bossman claimed the traditional “loaf” prize.
