Fisheries Expo Gala Dinner Raises N156 000 for Industry Workers

The Namibia Fisheries and Corporate Expo raised N$156 000 at its inaugural gala dinner held resently in Walvis Bay, with the funds set to support initiatives aimed at improving the well-being of people working in the fishing industry.

Fisheries and Marine Resources Minister Inge Zaamwani called for stronger collaboration between government, fishing companies and workers to secure the future of Namibia’s fisheries sector and ensure that the country’s marine resources benefit more Namibians.

Speaking at the gala dinner, held under the theme “Recognising Fishermen for their Leadership and Commitment to the Fishing Sector,” Zaamwani congratulated the organisers, sponsors, partners and volunteers for launching what she described as a long-overdue initiative celebrating one of Namibia’s most strategic economic sectors.

The event placed fishermen and other industry workers at the centre of attention, recognising the contribution of factory workers, vessel crews, captains, officers, technicians and other employees who keep the fisheries value chain operating.

Zaamwani emphasised the importance of cooperation across the sector, saying stronger partnerships would be critical to building a sustainable fisheries industry while ensuring greater economic opportunities for Namibians.

The gala dinner also served as a fundraising platform, with the proceeds intended to support programmes benefiting men and women who have dedicated their working lives to the fishing industry.

The initiative will also facilitate events promoting healthy, safe and productive lifestyles among industry workers. Former fishermen’s representative and expo founder Thomas Mununga said the organisers are already planning the sector’s first-ever fishing industry sports and wellness games.

The games will take place from 1 to 4 October at Jan Wilken Stadium in Walvis Bay, bringing together people from across the fishing industry for sporting, wellness and community activities.

The organisers said the initiative is intended to strengthen solidarity within the sector while promoting healthier lifestyles among workers and celebrating their contribution to Namibia’s economy.
