Car wash operators and other businesses operating without approval along Sam Nujoma Avenue and the Independence Road Reserve have been given 14 days to stop their activities and vacate the road reserves.
The Municipality of Walvis Bay issued the public notice on 18 August, saying municipal assessments found that the businesses were operating without the required approvals and permits. According to the municipality, some operators have also erected unauthorised structures and placed equipment within the public road reserves, which is against municipal regulations, land-use requirements and applicable legislation.
The municipality said the road reserves must also be cleared because an official road construction project is planned for the areas. Affected operators have 14 calendar days from the date of the notice to cease all unauthorised commercial activities, remove structures and equipment, and completely vacate the road reserves. This includes removing hoses, ramps, water connections and other items used for their businesses.
The municipality reminded businesses and informal traders that they must obtain the necessary business registration, fitness certificate, trading permit and land-use approval before operating. It warned that those who fail to comply could face enforcement action without further notice. This may include criminal prosecution, statutory fines, the removal or demolition of unauthorised structures, impoundment of equipment and disconnection of unauthorised utility connections. All costs related to such enforcement action will be carried by the responsible parties.
People who want to operate a car wash or other business legally are encouraged to contact the Municipality of Walvis Bay at the Kuisebmond Municipal Offices to enquire about business registration, permits, land-use requirements and the lawful leasing or acquisition of municipal land.
The municipality urged all affected operators to comply within the 14-day period to avoid enforcement action and additional costs.
