Kudus End Season in Heartbreak

FNB Kudus ended their season on a heartbreaking note after surrendering their Namibia Rugby Union (NRU) Premier League crown to FNB Wanderers, who stormed to a commanding 52–27 victory in Saturday’s final at the Hage Geingob Stadium in Windhoek.

The Walvis Bay outfit fought hard to defend their title, but Wanderers proved too strong, combining forward power with clinical backline attacks to reclaim the championship in emphatic fashion. Kudus remained within striking distance at half-time, trailing 21–17 after an entertaining opening 40 minutes.

However, Wanderers raised the intensity after the break, eventually scoring eight tries to Kudus’ three to seal a convincing 25-point victory. Kudus made a promising start, with flyhalf Kyle Wentzel opening the scoring with a penalty before winger Aston Mukwiilongo broke through the Wanderers defence for a converted try to give the coastal side a 10–0 lead.

Wanderers responded as the contest gathered momentum, while Wentzel produced an individual moment of brilliance for Kudus, chipping over the defensive line and winning the race to score. Despite Kudus’ first-half resistance, Wanderers gradually took control and carried their advantage into the break.

Substitute Aurelio Plato briefly reignited Kudus’ hopes with an early second-half penalty, bringing the defending champions closer. Centre Justin Newman also crossed for a try as Kudus attempted to fight their way back into the contest. However, Wanderers maintained their attacking pressure and pulled away to secure the Premier League trophy, ending Kudus’ reign as Namibia’s top club rugby side.

For Kudus, the defeat was a bitter conclusion to a campaign that had taken them all the way to the final. The coastal side must now regroup and begin preparations for another title challenge next season.

It was an outstanding day for Wanderers, who also captured the women’s title with a 45–26 victory over defending champions UNAM.

The Reserve League final produced another thrilling encounter, with UNAM edging RDI Kudus 33–30 in a closely contested battle that went down to the wire.
