Works and Transport Minister Veikko Nekundi has handed over a N$132 million road rehabilitation project aimed at restoring six deteriorating roads covering approximately eight kilometres in Walvis Bay.
The project is a joint initiative between the Roads Authority (RA), Road Fund Administration (RFA) and Walvis Bay Municipality, with Unik Construction appointed as the contractor.
The rehabilitation will cover 5th Street East, 6th Street East, Hidipo Hamutenya Road, Kovambo Nujoma Drive, 5th Road and Grand Avenue.
Speaking during the groundbreaking and site handover ceremony, Nekundi called for greater accountability in the implementation of government projects, saying leadership must ultimately be measured by tangible results for communities. He urged all stakeholders to ensure that the roads are completed on time, within budget and to the required quality standards, while ensuring value for money.
Nekundi cautioned Unik Construction that the N$132 million project must be delivered within the agreed timeframe without compromising the quality and durability of the infrastructure.
He also stressed the importance of treating workers fairly and responsibly, warning contractors against the mistreatment of employees working on government-funded road projects.
The project is expected to bring relief to motorists and communities affected by deteriorating road conditions while strengthening infrastructure in one of Namibia’s most important commercial and logistics centres.
Erongo Regional Governor Nathalia /Goagoses joined Minister Nekundi, together with the leadership of the Roads Authority and Road Fund Administration, for the site handover and commencement of the Lot 4 road rehabilitation project.
Governor /Goagoses highlighted the importance of quality road infrastructure to the movement of people and goods, road safety and economic activity, particularly as Walvis Bay continues to grow as a key port and logistics hub.
She said the rehabilitation is expected to improve connectivity, enhance road safety, support local businesses and trade, create employment opportunities and contribute to an improved quality of life for residents and road users.
The Governor welcomed the commencement of the project and called for continued cooperation between government, the municipality, contractor and community to ensure successful delivery and long-term maintenance of the infrastructure.
The project marks a significant investment in Walvis Bay’s road network and is expected to support the town’s continued economic growth while improving conditions for motorists, businesses and residents.
