The Municipality of Walvis Bay has received a N$2.74 million boost to its waste management operations, with the Namport Social Investment Fund donating a skip truck and 10 heavy-duty skips to help combat littering and illegal dumping.
The equipment was officially handed over yesterday, with NSIF chairperson Amos Shiyuka and Deputy Mayor Cllr Miina Hangula emphasising the importance of partnerships in keeping the coastal town clean and protecting its environment. The donation comprises a Hino 500 truck fitted with a 12-tonne skip loader and 10 skips manufactured locally by Walvis Bay-based WM Engineering, supporting both municipal service delivery and local enterprise.
The municipality has also purchased 30 additional heavy-duty skips and two trucks, further strengthening its waste collection capacity. This brings the town’s resources to 50 skips and three trucks, according to the figures provided. Hangula said the investment would help improve waste removal and reduce waste accumulation in residential areas and public spaces, but stressed that keeping Walvis Bay clean remained a shared responsibility. Shiyuka called on residents to use designated skips correctly and urged businesses to support clean-up initiatives and future waste management partnerships.
Both leaders highlighted the need for proper maintenance and responsible use of the equipment to ensure lasting benefits for residents, businesses and visitors.
