Namibia’s beach volleyball pair, Rene Steinkopff and Robert Alexander Sinclair, concluded their Pool A campaign at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games without a victory after suffering defeats against Sierra Leone, Germany and Morocco.
The Namibian duo began their tournament on Saturday against Sierra Leone’s Sulaiman Bangura and Alie Kainesie, falling 2-0 in straight sets. Sierra Leone secured the win with scores of 21-16 and 21-13.
Their second match presented an even sterner test as they came up against Germany’s highly rated pair, Lasse Hüper and Filo Wüst, the reigning Under-18 world champions. The Germans dominated the contest, claiming a convincing 2-0 victory with set scores of 21-3 and 21-6.
Despite the difficult start, Steinkopff and Sinclair produced their strongest performance of the tournament in their final pool match against Morocco’s Yasser Errazi and Othmane Taghdouini on Sunday.
The Namibians showed determination and fighting spirit, taking the opening set 22-20 and raising hopes of a breakthrough victory. Morocco, however, responded strongly, claiming the second set 21-13 before edging a closely contested deciding set 15-12 to seal a 2-1 win.
While the results did not go Namibia’s way, the tournament provided invaluable international experience for the young athletes, who competed against some of the strongest junior beach volleyball teams in the world.
The Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games continue to serve as an important development platform for Namibia’s emerging sporting talent, offering athletes the opportunity to gain exposure, build confidence and test themselves against top international competition.
For Steinkopff and Sinclair, the experience gained on the sands of Saly Beach is expected to contribute significantly to their growth as they continue their sporting journey on the international stage. Photo Credit:@namibianoc
