NovaNam Fleet Renews Global FISH Certification for Ethical Labour Practices
NovaNam Fleet Renews Global FISH Certification for Ethical Labour Practices 2

NovaNam, a leading Namibian fishing company, has successfully renewed its internationally recognised FISH Standard for Crew certification, reaffirming its commitment to fair, safe and ethical labour practices across its fleet.

The certification renewal was confirmed on 27 March following a rigorous independent audit process.

Operating from the ports of Lüderitz and Walvis Bay, NovaNam’s fleet comprises two freezer trawlers and five wet fish vessels, including Lalandii One, NovaNam One and NovaNam Two.

Together, these vessels employ approximately 280 crew members, while the company’s total workforce stands at around 2 300 employees nationwide. NovaNam made history in 2022 as the first fishing company globally to obtain the FISH certification. It remains the only company in Namibia, and currently across Africa, to hold this prestigious accreditation, which recognises compliance with international labour standards at sea. The FISH (Fairness, Integrity, Safety and Health) Standard for Crew is based on four core principles and 28 criteria aligned with global conventions, including the International Labour Organisation’s Work in Fishing Convention (C188). The certification process involves thorough audits and direct interviews with crew members to ensure transparency and accountability. With over 35 years in operation, NovaNam continues to play a significant role in employment creation and economic development. The renewed certification further strengthens its position as a leader in ethical fishing practices, setting a benchmark for the industry both locally and internationally.

Speaking on the achievement, Nuno Cosme of the Nueva Pescanova Group highlighted the company’s dedication to responsible governance and employee welfare.“Providing safe and fair working conditions is essential for sustainable operations,” he said.

NovaNam’s Country Manager and Group CEO, Edwin Kamatoto, added that the certification reflects the company’s ongoing efforts to uphold high labour standards while contributing to Namibia’s fishing industry and economy.
