Oranjemund Rugby Club produced a storming first-half display before holding off a determined second-half comeback from Walvis Bay-based Oceans Rugby Club to secure a thrilling 26–19 victory at the Hage Geingob Stadium in Windhoek.
The win sees saw the men from the southern coastal town advance, while Oceans’ remarkable campaign comes to an end after the Walvis Bay club reached the quarter-finals and semi-finals for the first time since its establishment in 2022.
Oceans entered the campaign with a dream of winning their first-ever title, but Oranjemund proved too strong in the opening half.
The foundation of Oranjemund’s victory was laid by an outstanding performance from eighthman Keanan Beukes, who powered his way through the Oceans defence to score the team’s opening three tries.
Displaying a combination of power, speed and excellent support play, Beukes was at the heart of Oranjemund’s dominant start.
With Ronald Solomons converting all three tries, Oranjemund raced into a commanding 21–0 lead at halftime.
Oceans returned from the break with renewed determination and finally opened their account through Quentos Damens, giving the Walvis Bay side hope of an unlikely comeback. However, Oranjemund responded quickly when flyhalf Theodore Steenkamp broke through the Oceans defence to score, extending the lead to 26–5.
With their backs against the wall, Oceans refused to surrender and launched a spirited fightback.
Kwenu Daniels crossed for a try before Denzel Sitambi added another, cutting Oranjemund’s advantage to just seven points at 26–19 and setting up a tense finish.
Oceans continued to push for another score, but Oranjemund stood firm under pressure and managed the closing stages brilliantly to protect their lead.
The final whistle confirmed a 26–19 victory for Oranjemund, following a match of two very different halves.
For Oranjemund, Beukes’ outstanding first-half performance proved decisive, while Oceans can take enormous pride in their campaign and their historic run into the knockout stages.
Although their dream of lifting their first title has ended, Oceans Rugby Club’s progress since being established in 2022 signals a growing force in Walvis Bay rugby.
