Sixty unemployed residents of the Walvis Bay Urban Constituency are set to gain practical skills through two skills-development workshops aimed at improving employability and creating opportunities for self-employment.

The initiative is being facilitated by the Walvis Bay Urban Constituency Office, in collaboration with WAD and its coordinator, Asia Aisia.

The training programme, running from 21 September to October 2026, has enrolled 60 beneficiaries, with 30 participants allocated to each of the two training categories.

The first programme focuses on Computer and Office Administration, equipping participants with practical skills in computer literacy, document preparation, filing, communication, data capturing and general office procedures.

The training is intended to help unemployed participants improve their chances of securing employment while also providing skills that can be applied in small businesses, community organisations and other workplaces.

The second programme focuses on Hospitality and Tourism, providing participants with practical knowledge relevant to one of Walvis Bay and the wider Erongo Region’s key economic sectors.

The training seeks to prepare beneficiaries for employment opportunities in the hospitality and tourism industries, while also exposing them to potential self-employment and income-generating opportunities.

The initiative is expected to contribute to economic empowerment by giving unemployed women and men access to market-relevant skills and capacity-building opportunities.

Organisers said the programmes could also help strengthen the local workforce by increasing the number of residents with practical administrative, digital, hospitality and tourism skills.

Beyond employment, the training is aimed at encouraging entrepreneurship and reducing dependency on government support by helping beneficiaries develop skills that can be converted into income-generating activities.

At the end of the programme, 30 participants in Computer and Office Administration and 30 in Hospitality and Tourism are expected to have acquired practical skills that could improve their employability, entrepreneurship prospects and participation in the local economy.
