Sixteen vulnerable students from the Walvis Bay Urban Constituency have received financial assistance through the Erongo Regional Council’s Student Support Programme to help them pursue tertiary education.
The Walvis Bay Urban Constituency Office on Thursday handed over proof of payment to the beneficiaries, with priority given to students studying in the medical field to help address the country’s growing demand for healthcare professionals.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Walvis Bay Urban Constituency Councillor Albertina Nkoshi said education remains one of the most effective tools for transforming lives, reducing poverty and advancing Namibia’s socio-economic development.
“It gives me great pleasure to be part of this important occasion as we hand over proof of payment to students who have been awarded financial assistance through the Erongo Regional Council’s Student Support Programme,” she said.
Nkoshi said the constituency office remains committed to supporting deserving students and investing in the country’s future through education.
She explained that the Erongo Regional Council allocates N$50,000 annually to each constituency to assist vulnerable students with tertiary education expenses. This year, 16 students from Walvis Bay Urban benefited from the programme, receiving grants of between N$3,000 and N$5,000.
Although the assistance does not cover all study costs, Nkoshi said it is intended to ease the financial burden on students and their families.
“Every contribution, no matter how small, has the potential to make a meaningful difference,” she said.
She urged the beneficiaries to remain focused, disciplined and committed to academic excellence, describing the financial support as an investment in their future and in the continued development of Walvis Bay Urban, the Erongo Region and Namibia.
“We believe in your potential and look forward to seeing you become professionals who will positively contribute to the development of our constituency, the region and the country,” she said.
The Student Support Programme forms part of the Erongo Regional Council’s ongoing efforts to improve access to higher education for vulnerable students while developing the skilled workforce needed to drive Namibia’s long-term social and economic development.
