The Erongo Regional Council has appealed to residents, farmers, visitors and road users to be extra careful as a wildfire continues to burn in parts of the Daures and Karibib constituencies.

In a statement issued by the Office of the Chief Regional Officer, the Council said wildfires pose a serious danger to people, livestock, wildlife, grazing land, infrastructure and the environment. The Council warned that the recent fires highlight how quickly uncontrolled fires can spread, especially during the dry and windy season, causing major damage to communities and economic activities in the region.

Residents are urged not to deliberately or carelessly start fires in areas that are at high risk. They are also asked not to burn vegetation, rubbish or any other materials without taking the necessary safety precautions or obtaining permission where required. The Council further encouraged farmers and residents to remain alert, keep firebreaks in good condition, report any fire outbreaks immediately to the relevant authorities and cooperate with emergency teams and local leaders involved in firefighting efforts.

The Erongo Regional Council thanked all those who have assisted in battling the wildfire, including emergency personnel, the Air Force, farmers, volunteers, traditional leaders and other stakeholders. The Council stressed that preventing wildfires is everyone’s responsibility and called on all residents, community leaders and farmers to work together to reduce the risk of fires. “Through vigilance, responsible behaviour and the prompt reporting of fire incidents, we can help protect lives, livelihoods, property and our natural environment,” the statement concluded.
