The Hope and Gorob Copper-Gold Project, located approximately 120 kilometres south-east of Walvis Bay, is poised to become one of Namibia’s most significant new mining developments, with production expected to commence within the next two years.
Situated within the historic Matchless Copper Belt, the project centres on the Hope, Gorob and Vendome deposits. Supported by Mining Licence ML246, which remains valid until 2040, the mine is expected to operate for more than a decade and make a significant contribution to Namibia’s mining sector and broader economy.
Recent feasibility studies conducted by international consultants have highlighted the project’s strong economic potential, with a projected Net Present Value of approximately US$46 million and an Internal Rate of Return exceeding 60 percent. Ongoing exploration activities have also identified promising gold mineralisation, which could further enhance the project’s long-term value and economic impact.
A major milestone in the project’s development has been the acquisition of the former Namib Lead and Zinc Mining processing plant near Swakopmund. By refurbishing and recommissioning existing infrastructure, the developers expect to reduce capital costs, accelerate production timelines and minimise environmental impacts. The project will employ advanced dry ore sorting technology to upgrade ore before transportation, reducing waste, transport costs and water consumption. In addition, developers are pursuing a hybrid energy solution that incorporates renewable energy sources, supporting Namibia’s sustainability and green energy objectives.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Erongo Regional Council Chairperson Councillor Lazarus Kanelombe, representing the Governor of the Erongo Region, Nathalia /Goagoses, described the project as a catalyst for regional development and economic growth. “This ceremony marks far more than the commencement of mining activities. It signifies a new chapter of economic opportunity, industrial development and shared prosperity for the people of the Erongo Region and Namibia as a whole,” he said.
Kanelombe welcomed the company’s commitment to local contractors, skills development and stakeholder engagement, stressing the importance of ensuring that surrounding communities benefit from the project’s success.
Stakeholders remain optimistic that the Hope and Gorob Copper-Gold Project will drive sustainable growth, create employment opportunities and attract further investment to the Erongo Region for many years to come.
