Usakos Town Council is moving forward with several development projects aimed at boosting the local economy, improving services and strengthening the town’s infrastructure.
The updates form part of the Council’s Strategic Plan for 2025 to 2030. One of the biggest projects is the planned Usakos SME Park. QKR Navachab Gold Mine has donated N$10 million towards its construction. The park is expected to support small and medium businesses, create jobs and expand economic opportunities in town. An earlier donation of N$250 000 from the Chinese Embassy has been redirected to set up the Hakhaseb Open Market.
The site has already been identified, and the market will give local traders a place to operate while the larger SME Park is developed. Sports infrastructure is also set to improve. The Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture has selected Usakos and Uis as priority towns in the Erongo Region. The project, led by the Governor’s office in partnership with the Erongo Regional Council, aims to support youth development, sport and tourism. On the service delivery side, the Council has used funding from the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development to buy a front-end loader, a tipper truck and a waste-management truck. Two water reservoirs have been installed and three boreholes drilled.
The town is also working with several partners, including the City of Windhoek, Telecom Namibia, the National Housing Enterprise, Lingua College, Welwitschia University and TransNamib. These partnerships focus on housing, informal settlement upgrades, land development, youth programmes, infrastructure and town beautification. Heritage projects are progressing too. Artefacts that spent more than 100 years at the Bern Historical Museum in Switzerland have been welcomed back in a special homecoming ceremony. More than 300 items are expected to arrive soon. The TransNamib locomotive in the town centre is also being upgraded to boost tourism. Council says it remains guided by the Usakos 20-Year Structure Plan and the current strategic plan as it works to build a more resilient and economically active town.
