Employees of Erongo Marine Enterprises (EME), part of the Oceana Group, have petitioned management over a range of unresolved labour concerns affecting permanent and temporary sea-going workers aboard the MB Desert Ruby and MB Desert Jewel.
The petition, dated 17 August 2026, was submitted to EME management in Walvis Bay. Employees said the concerns have been raised repeatedly since 2023 through internal grievance procedures, correspondence and employee representatives, but remain unresolved. Among the issues raised are remuneration, leave administration, payroll, working conditions, employee benefits, recruitment and human resources practices. The employees also raised concerns about alleged unequal treatment, recruitment practices, employment contracts, payment arrangements, fatigue, long working hours and communication between management and workers. A key issue highlighted in the petition is the employment of temporary workers.
Employees alleged that management had previously indicated that temporary workers would be considered for permanent positions on a first-come, first-served basis. They claimed, however, that this arrangement had not been consistently applied, alleging that some workers who have served as temporary employees since 2006 were overlooked in favour of workers recruited in 2011. The employees called for senior management intervention, an independent investigation into the concerns and meaningful consultation with affected workers. They stressed that the petition was not intended to create conflict, but to promote fairness, transparency and constructive engagement between employees and management.
In a response, EME confirmed receipt of a petition from a group of permanent sea-based employees. “EME respects the right of employees to raise concerns and seek clarification on matters affecting their employment and working conditions,” the company said. The company added that the issues raised would receive due consideration and that further consultation would take place through its established engagement processes. The employees said they remain committed to the success of the company, while hoping that the latest engagement will lead to meaningful resolutions and improved labour relations.
