Residents Need Permission To Repair Potholes
Residents need permission 3

The Municipality of Walvis Bay has confirmed that residents may not carry out pothole repairs on public roads without first obtaining authorisation from the municipality.

The clarification follows reports of residents in some areas taking it upon themselves to fill potholes due to concerns about road conditions. In response to questions from the Namib Times, the municipality said it appreciates the community spirit shown by residents who want to help maintain the town. However, municipal roads are public assets, and any repair work must comply with engineering standards, safety requirements and technical specifications.

According to the municipality, no formal requests were received from the individuals who reportedly carried out pothole repairs be-fore the work started. Residents, businesses and organisations who wish to assist with road maintenance are encouraged to first engage with the municipality through the appropriate channels. The municipality said proposed projects must be assessed and coordinated to ensure public safety and compliance with municipal standards. Depending on the nature of the work, applicants may also be required to provide insurance cover and indemnify the municipality against any potential risks. The municipality further noted that it already has an active pothole repair programme in place. An appointed contractor is currently repairing potholes and carrying out road maintenance in Namib Street, 6th Road, Nangolo Mbumba Drive and Sam Nujoma Avenue. Another contractor has also started pothole repair and resealing work in Kabeljou Street.

The municipality said it remains open to constructive partnerships that contribute to the development and maintenance of Walvis Bay. Individuals, groups or organisations interested in assisting are invited to submit a written proposal to the Department of Roads and Building Control for consideration. “Each proposal will be assessed on its merits, taking into account technical requirements, public safety considerations, liability implications, resource availability and compliance with applicable municipal standards, policies and procedures,” the municipality stated.

Residents who wish to report potholes are encouraged to contact the municipality so that the issues can be logged and addressed through the official maintenance programme.
