The Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia (SDFN), in partnership with the Municipality of Swakopmund, continues to make progress in improving housing opportunities for residents in the town.
Since signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the municipality in 2018, the federation has established 56 savings groups with more than 1 125 members in Mondesa and DRC Proper. The initiative encourages community savings and supports residents in working together towards owning homes. Over the years, the Shack Dwellers Federation has helped build several houses in Swakopmund, including 30 houses in 1999, 36 houses in 2016, 32 houses in 2020, and 18 houses completed in 2025. Construction work is continuing for the 2025/2026 period, with additional houses currently being built in DRC Proper. Another important development is the allocation of land in Extension 42, which will create more opportunities for future residential development and home ownership for local residents. The federation’s impact extends beyond Swakopmund. Nationally, the Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia and the Namibia Housing Action Group (NHAG) have assisted in the construction of more than 11 000 ho housing units are also currently under construction countrywide through community led housing projects. According to the federation, access to proper housing is about more than just building structures. “A house is more than just bricks and mortar, it is dignity, security, and hope for a better future,” the organisation said. The newly constructed homes in DRC stand as examples of how partnerships and community-driven projects can improve the lives of residents and create stronger communities.
