The Swakopmund Municipality has invited residents, businesses and other interested parties to take part in an environmental assessment process for the planned upgrading and continued operation of the town’s Municipal Waste Disposal Facility.
The Environmental Scoping Assessment and Environmental Management Plan will look at the proposed improvements to the existing waste facility to ensure safer and more sustainable waste management in Swakopmund. The planned upgrade will include improved infrastructure such as access control, internal roads, a weighbridge area, recycling and composting facilities, stormwater management systems, office and storage facilities, as well as preparation for future landfill expansion.
The facility will continue to receive municipal solid waste generated within the Swakopmund Municipality area. This includes household waste, commercial waste, demolition waste, garden waste and non-toxic industrial waste. The municipality confirmed that hazardous and toxic waste will not be accepted at the facility and must instead be transported to approved hazardous waste disposal sites.
Geo Pollution Technologies (Pty) Ltd has been appointed by the municipality to conduct the environmental assessment in line with the Environmental Management Act and Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations. Community involvement forms an important part of the process, and residents, businesses and other affected parties are encouraged to register as Interested and Affected Parties (I&APs).
Registered parties will have the opportunity to submit comments, concerns or recommendations that will be considered during the assessment process.
Swakopmund Municipality said public input will help shape the future of waste management in the town and contribute towards developing a more sustainable waste disposal system.
