Walvis Bay Bans Tyre Disposal at Landfill Site 1

The Municipality of Walvis Bay has announced an immediate prohibition on the disposal of tyres at the town’s landfill site, in a move aimed at strengthening waste management practices and protecting the environment.

In a public notice issued minutes ago, the municipality informed residents, businesses, and waste service providers that tyres will no longer be accepted at the landfill until further notice.

The directive forms part of broader efforts to curb illegal activities, particularly the burning of tyres, which poses serious environmental and health risks.

Municipal officials emphasised that all stakeholders are expected to comply with the new regulation and make alternative arrangements to store or manage used tyres responsibly in the interim. “The measure is part of ongoing efforts to improve waste control systems and prevent unlawful practices such as tyre burning,” the notice stated.

The municipality further indicated that it is in the process of finalising sustainable and long-term solutions for tyre management.

Details on these plans will be communicated once they are completed. In the meantime, residents and businesses seeking guidance on proper tyre management, or those wishing to provide input towards a sustainable solution, are encouraged to contact the Solid Waste Section at 064 214 306 / 064 214 3064 or via email at solidwaste@walvisbaycc.org.na.

The municipality has appealed for cooperation from the public as it works towards implementing improved waste management systems in Walvis Bay.
