‘Choices, Consequences, Change’

Twenty learners from two Walvis Bay schools were given a sobering lesson on the consequences of life choices during an educational visit to the Walvis Bay Correctional Facility.

Learners from Walvis Bay International School and De Duine Secondary School took part in the initiative aimed at raising awareness about substance abuse, decision-making and the realities of life behind bars. The Walvis Bay International School delegation, led by Martella Diederiks and accompanied by two teachers, joined learners from De Duine Secondary School, led by Coastal Drug Awareness Campaign (CODAC) director Mrs Sini and two teachers. Under the theme “Choices, Consequences, Change”, the learners took part in guided tours of the correctional facility, substance abuse awareness sessions and candid engagements with Correctional Officers and rehabilitated inmates.

The interactions provided the young people with first-hand perspectives on how decisions, particularly those involving substance abuse and crime, can have lasting consequences on individuals, families and communities. Through conversations with rehabilitated inmates, learners were also exposed to stories of hardship, accountability and transformation, highlighting the importance of making responsible choices before circumstances spiral out of control. The initiative sought to go beyond traditional classroom lessons by exposing learners to real-life experiences and encouraging empathy, critical thinking and personal responsibility. For the participating learners, the visit offered a powerful reminder that every choice carries consequences, but that change and rehabilitation remain possible.

The programme forms part of efforts to empower young people with knowledge and life skills that can help them make positive decisions and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
