The community of Walvis Bay is set to come together on Saturday, 25 July 2026, for the Steps of Love – A Remembrance Walk and Donation Drive, an event dedicated to honouring the memory of children who have passed away while extending support to vulnerable families in need.

Organisers are inviting residents of all ages to participate in the 5-kilometre coastal walk, which aims to provide a space for remembrance, healing and compassion. The event carries the theme, “Walking to Remember. Giving to Care,” encouraging participants to celebrate the lives of children who are no longer with their families while making a positive difference in the lives of others.

Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Walvis Bay Municipal Swimming Pool, with the walk officially starting at 9:00 a.m. Participants will follow a scenic route along the coastline to Flamingo Villas before returning to the swimming pool. Rather than paying an entry fee, participants are encouraged to bring donations that will benefit local charities supporting children and families. Suggested donations include toiletries such as soap, toothpaste and shampoo, non-perishable food items, and baby care products.

The collected items will be distributed to three organisations serving the Walvis Bay community: The Ruach Elohim Foundation (The Babybox), Walvis Bay Child & Family Centre (Sunshine Centre), and Walvis Bay Kids Haven.

A special remembrance ceremony will conclude the event. Families are encouraged to bring a framed photograph of their child to place on a remembrance table before the walk.

Following the walk, participants will gather for a candle-lighting ceremony, where loved ones’ names will be spoken and memories shared in a moment of reflection and unity.
Organisers say the event is open to everyone, whether participants choose to walk, run or simply attend in support of bereaved families. They hope the initiative will not only honour cherished memories but also strengthen community bonds through acts of kindness and generosity.

The Steps of Love remembrance walk serves as a reminder that while grief is deeply personal, communities can play an important role in offering comfort, hope and support. Every step taken and every donation made will contribute towards improving the lives of children and families in need while ensuring that the memories of those lost continue to be celebrated.
