Learners at Usakos Junior Secondary School are set to enjoy a safer and more secure learning environment following the completion of an 880-metre boundary wall valued at N$873,584.85, funded by Langer Heinrich Uranium (LHU).
The new infrastructure was officially handed over this week, marking a significant investment in the safety and wellbeing of learners, teachers and the wider school community.
For years, multiple openings around the school grounds allowed learners to enter and leave the premises through uncontrolled points, raising safety and security concerns.
The new wall is expected to bring greater control to the movement of learners, with access concentrated through designated entry and exit points.
The project forms part of LHU’s corporate social responsibility programme and reflects the company’s commitment to supporting communities beyond its mining operations. At the handover ceremony, Erongo Governor Dr Nathalia Goagoses described the project as far more than the construction of a physical barrier.
“It represents a shared commitment to the safety, dignity and educational development of our children,” she said.
The Governor praised LHU’s contribution, saying projects of this nature complement government efforts to improve community infrastructure while creating conditions in which children can learn safely and with dignity.
She stressed that education remains one of Namibia’s most important development priorities and quoted former South African President Nelson Mandela: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
With Usakos home to nearly 11 000 residents, Goagoses said the town deserves inclusive development that responds to the needs of its growing community. She urged parents, teachers, learners and the wider community to take ownership of the new infrastructure and ensure that the wall is properly maintained for future generations. “When we invest in the safety and education of our children, we are investing in the future of Usakos, the Erongo Region and Namibia as a whole,” Goagoses said.
Parents, teachers and learners welcomed the project, saying the new wall will provide greater peace of mind and contribute to a more secure and conducive learning environment.
The handover underscores a simple but powerful message: a safer school creates a stronger foundation for education and a stronger future for Usakos.
