The Namibian Marine Corps recently celebrated its 10th anniversary, commemorating a decade of dedicated service, sacrifice and commitment to safeguarding the country’s sovereignty and national security.
The milestone marks ten years since the Marine Corps was officially commissioned on 22 July 2016, although the unit was established in 2005 as part of the continued development of the Namibian Defence Force (NDF) and the Namibian Navy.
Speaking on behalf of the Commandant of the Marine Corps, Captain (Navy) Olavi Shipunda, Battalion Commander Commander Christian Keendjele paid tribute to the men and women who laid the foundation for the unit.
Reflecting on the Corps’ journey over the past decade, Keendjele praised the pioneering members whose dedication and determination established a force built on the core values of discipline, resilience and excellence. “Over the past decade, the Marine Corps has played a vital role in various operational deployments, joint exercises and national security efforts,” he said.
He noted that the Marines have consistently demonstrated professionalism, adaptability and courage, from protecting Namibia’s coastline to supporting other national security agencies in responding to evolving security challenges.
Despite facing numerous challenges, Keendjele said the Marine Corps has continued to grow in strength and capability, developing into a highly trained and disciplined force prepared to defend the nation whenever called upon.
He also acknowledged the unwavering support of the leadership of the Namibian Defence Force and the Namibian Navy, saying their strategic direction and continued investment in training and professional military education have been instrumental in shaping the Corps into a modern and effective fighting force.
The anniversary celebrations not only honoured the achievements of the past ten years but also reaffirmed the Marine Corps’ commitment to excellence, professionalism and service to the nation. As the unit enters its second decade, its leadership says the focus remains on strengthening operational readiness while continuing to uphold the values that have defined the Marine Corps since its commissioning.
