Narraville Primary School in Walvis Bay has confirmed two cases of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) among its learners, while several other pupils are reportedly showing symptoms.

In a letter issued to parents and guardians today, the school’s principal, Mrs Y. Theron, said the school was taking the matter seriously and urged families to remain vigilant to prevent further spread of the contagious viral illness.

HFMD is a common viral infection that mainly affects young children. Symptoms include fever, sore throat, mouth sores, and a rash or blisters on the hands and feet.
The school has appealed to parents to closely monitor their children for symptoms and to keep them at home if they become ill. Parents are also advised to seek medical attention promptly and only allow children to return to school once they have fully recovered and are medically fit.

As part of preventative measures, the school encouraged regular handwashing and covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. The school also expressed concern about learners being sent to school while unwell, saying this places fellow learners and staff at risk and increases the spread of infectious diseases.

Parents are urged to collect children who become ill during the school day as soon as they are contacted.
Narraville Primary thanked parents and guardians for their cooperation, stressing that collective efforts are essential to safeguard the health and well-being of learners and staff.
